For those who are familiar with it, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (abbreviated B:tVS among fans) is a show that encompasses all of the things that a good television show should. Not only does it have an excellent plot and a fascinating storyline, it has likable characters, villains who are more than 2D caricatures of evil, and the snappy dialog that fans have come to expect from noted writer-director Joss Whedon. This was the television show that first brought Whedon to a wide audience, and it taught his fans to expect nothing but the best!
Buffy: the Vampire Slayer followed the trials of a young Californian girl who finds that her destiny is to be the Slayer, a human who is gifted with super strength and speed and who has been charged with protecting humans from the depredations of vampires, monsters and other evils. This show was written and directed by Joss Whedon and ran for an impressive seven seasons, garnering many awards and beginning film careers for many of the actors.
Heading up the talented cast is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Buffy Summers. Buffy was content to be a cheerleader and average teen until she became the Slayer and found that her duties involved risking her life on a nightly basis for the salvation of humanity. Buffy is guided on her mission by her Watcher, Rupert Giles, the librarian of her high school who also happens to be part of a secret society of men and women who study the supernatural and support the Slayer. She can also count on her best friend Willow, played with charm and grace by Alyson Hannigan, to ground her and support her, as well as the clumsy but well-meaning Xander Harris, as portrayed by Nicholas Brendan. Rounding out the cast is Seth Green, playing the laid-back werewolf Oz, and David Boreanaz, who plays the mysterious vampire Angel.
Throughout its seven seasons on the air, Buffy: the Vampire Slayer had its young heroine facing off against everything from tap-dancing demons, possessed puppets, ancient evils and even Dracula himself. Throughout the show, not only were evils dealt with, but identities were faced, lives were called into question and characters, grew, changed and developed. Time Magazine refers to the reality of the show by stating that “the demons and ghouls were comically rubber-faced, but Buffy's spirit was achingly real,” while The Washington Post cited the show as “influential.” With a strong young female protagonist and excellent plotting and direction, it is easy to see why this show still has all seven seasons available in DVD and continues to exist in a comic book form!
